Gum Disease
Gum or periodontal disease is a very common condition. Four out of every five adults have it and aren’t even aware. Periodontal disease is defined as a condition, affecting the gums or other tissues surrounding the teeth. Gums are swollen, sore or infected, due to a build-up of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky substance that contains bacteria, some of which is harmful to the gums.
There are various stages of gum disease, with the first being gingivitis or inflammation. If not treated properly, a condition called periodontitis can develop, affecting the tissues supporting the teeth, holding them in place. The final stage is advanced periodontitis. As the gums, bone and periodontal ligaments drastically deteriorate, teeth can become loose and may fall out.
Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease may include
- Persistent bad breath
- Red and swollen gums
- Tenderness and/or discomfort
- Loose teeth
- Bleeding and/or receeding gums
- New spacing between your teeth
- Pus around the teeth and gums

Treatment
The treatment of gum/periodontal disease depends on the severity.
Gingivitis Stage:
One or two professional cleanings by our hygienist and advice on how to increase daily dental hygiene.
Periodontitis:
A deep periodontal cleaning is required. The cleaning includes scaling (removal of plaque, tartar and/or toxins above and below the gums) and root debridement (smoothing of rough spots on the root surfaces), is recomended. This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and gum pockets to shrink. If this procedure is unsuccessful, surgery may be needed to reduce the pocket depths.
If a tooth has already been lost to advanced periodontitis, the dentist will recommend and explain various restorative dental procedures with you.
